Whether you’re a new parent overwhelmed by the demands of caring for an infant or a veteran parent whose teenaged child is out of control, asking for help is never easy.

Too often parents are isolated and without much support. They confront the toughest and most important job in the world with the sense that they have to go it alone.

But no one can go it alone.

The Parent Helpline can help you find programs and services in your community that can help. 1-800-CHILDREN is a free, confidential, multi-lingual information and referral service for anyone who has questions or concerns about a child or family. A trained Helpline Specialist is available to assist you everyday from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. After 10 p.m you can leave your name and number with our answering service, and we’ll get back to you the following morning.

How We Help

Louisa called 1-800-CHILDREN weeping and convinced that she had to give her three-year-old son Lincoln up for adoption. “I don’t want to,” she sobbed. “But I can’t provide for him.” We told her about an alternative and connected her to a community program that could care for Lincoln temporarily while she got the help she needed to start putting their lives back on track.

Susan called our Helpline distraught and desperate for answers. She learned her 11-year-old daughter Emily was being sexually abused by a family friend. Stunned and panic-stricken, Susan didn’t know what to do to get help for Emily. Our Helpline Specialist suggested several options and resources, including places where Emily could receive treatment and mental health services. We also referred Susan to her district attorney who made an arrest the following day.

Our Parent Helpline is uniquely positioned to help parents like Louisa and Susan. With an extensive database of programs and resources, we help families explore their options and connect them to sources of help. Beyond simply making referrals, we call agencies on behalf of families, research alternative courses of action, and help families consider their personal supports that can provide informal help. These measures assure that parents who have taken that critical first step toward help are heading down a path that leads to a solution.
