BUILDING RESILIENT COMMUNITIES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Recognizing the need to increase trauma-informed practice among child- and family-serving professionals, Prevent Child Abuse New York (PCANY) has created a curriculum grounded in a broad base of evidence on the effective application of the Five Protective Factors (PF). Offered in four different but interconnected instruction opportunities, the sessions provide an overview of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and childhood trauma, educate participants on the importance of building resilience in the children/youth/families they serve, and help them alter their day-to-day behavior by incorporating relevant PFs into their work.

Resilience screening/discussion: This documentary film chronicles the birth of a new movement among pediatricians, therapists, educators, and communities, who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction, and disease. PCANY staff screens this one-hour film and leads a reflective conversation with viewers about what they’ve learned. (Directed by James Redford, with nationally-recognized trauma expert and pediatrician Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris.)
Cost: Travel and honorarium

Launching Cross-systems Community Initiatives session: PCANY staff leads a facilitated discussion around understanding the implications of PF work for systems and programs. Participants will leave armed with strategies to undertake joint action and promote community readiness.
Cost: $1,000

ACEs/PF 101 session: PCANY staff screens Resilience, followed by a guided conversation. The next three hours of interactive work focus on: ACEs overview; PF/resiliency; and an audience-specific facilitated discussion during which participants develop next steps for implementation and determine how to incorporate what they’ve learned into daily practice.
Cost: $1,000

Comprehensive PF session: Our nationally accredited PF Trainers provide a two-day interactive, activity-based session that aims to change participants’ perspective about resiliency. Includes a screening of Resilience.
