What We Do
Since 1980, Prevent Child Abuse New York has inspired parents, policymakers, and community members to put kids’ needs first. We focus on community programs and public policies that prioritize prevention right from the start so child abuse and neglect never occur.
Our work supports the healthy development and prosperity of New York’s children, families, and communities through public awareness, training and technical assistance, and policy advocacy.
Prevention Principles
1
Children are the foundation of a sustainable and prosperous society.
3
All parents have the right to the support and knowledge that child-rearing demands.
2
All children have the right to safe, secure, and supportive environments.
4
Child abuse prevention requires strengthening families and communities.
Programs
Assure that more than 5,000 families get high-quality services at 40 community-based programs across the state, stopping child abuse before it begins through voluntary home visits for high-risk new and expectant parents.
A capacity-building process through which organizations can partner with families and local communities on a sustained basis to improve well-being and other needs.
The goal is to ground professionals in how to enhance the protective factors of the children and families they work with and contribute to organizational culture change that strengthens the protective factors of all staff.
Mobilizes partners from across New York to advocate for public policies and laws that protect children and for programs that prevent their abuse and neglect.
Prevent Child Abuse NY IS Primary Prevention
Last year, over 54,000 New York State children were abused and neglected by those who should nurture and protect them.
In addition to the consequences of the immediate harm, child victims suffer a higher risk of long-term problems: learning disabilities, poor health, mental illness, substance abuse, and juvenile and adult crime. We all pay the price for child abuse. New York State spends an estimated $2.4 billion annually to deal with the consequences.
Prevent Child Abuse New York is the only private nonprofit agency serving the entire state whose single mission is to prevent child abuse in all its forms.
Additional Programs
Public and Professional Education
Encourages all New Yorkers to participate in preventing child abuse through literature development, exhibits, workshops, public awareness campaigns, our website and blogs, and the April Pinwheels for Prevention campaign.
Protective Factors Framework/ Standards of Quality network
Includes our partners, locally based agencies, state agencies, and PFF Certified trainers who work in their communities to strengthen families and disseminate this prevention strategy.
The Home Visiting Coordination Initiative
A systems development project that engages regional-level programs to enhance home-visiting workforce opportunities and drive policy innovation.
Enough Abuse
Creates state and community partnerships that build adult and community responsibility for preventing child sexual abuse through training, public education, and youth-serving organizations.
Without Prevent Child Abuse New York, countless struggling and isolated parents might never find the help they need – community programs that we know prevent child abuse might not even exist – our State’s response to protecting children would dwindle.
